52 Portraits, 1/52

In 2012 and 2013, I took on a personal photo project that entailed photographing some aspect of my life every day for the full year. Initially, I foolishly thought that my 2 year old daughter and the 2nd child that was on the way would just be a part of this project and that I would have loads of other interesting and beautiful parts of my life to document. In fact, I came to realize that Zoe and then eventually Lilly would become the focus quite appropriately since they are at the core of every part of every one of my days. Project 365 made me appreciate the moments and the days of parenting young children that sometimes make you feel like you are living in that movie Groundhog Day. So much repetition, so many little rituals and it all goes far too quickly.  I am so glad that I have 2 years worth of the little moments bound between the pages of books that I have already flipped through countless times.

But this year, I wanted to do something different.  This year, I wanted to find a way to freeze each girl in a moment in time–52 moments to be exact–before I wake up and they’re suddenly 17 years old and asking me for the car keys.  I have always believed that a good portrait is a window into who a person really is. This project pushes me to stare at each of my daughters a little more closely. Who they are is changing every second and I can barely keep up but I can steal little pieces of who they are right now, each week.
