Everly

Everly’s dad reached out to me when she was 9 days old, wondering if it was too late for newborn photos.  He works with the sister of a previous repeat client and had seen some of my photos displayed on her desk.  Because Ryan and his wife had flexibility with scheduling, I was able to fit them in on a weekday in the late afternoon just as approached 2.5 weeks old.  Ryan was just arriving from work on his bike when I got there at 3:30 and the light was just about perfect as we began and only got better.

Like lots of families, Ryan had expressed concern about whether their apartment would be suitable for photos. Many people worry that their home is too small or too crowded with stuff or that the lighting isn’t ideal. I hope these photos support what I always say, which is that all we really need is a window and we can make just about any home work for photos.  I actually like when bits of people’s homes sneak into the photos because after all, it’s your home and it’s a part of the story. But most important are the people in the photos and the connections between you all when you add a new little person to the mix.

At the end of the session, we headed out to the front porch for a few shots of the first home that Everly knew. It was after 5 and traffic was picking up as the light got warmer and warmer by the minute.  As the happy threesome sat on the steps, a somewhat gruff looking man rolled down his window and yelled, “Congratulations!” as he drove by. New Englanders aren’t exactly known for being warm and friendly to strangers but it just goes to show that even here, if you’re brave enough to take on a newborn, everybody’s rooting for you.
